Nursing Program Overview

Since 1964​, the Evergreen Valley College Nursing Program has been highly regarded in the community for excellence in preparing students to enter the healthcare field.

Upon completion of our two-year program, student receives an Associate in Science Degree in Nursing and is eligible to take the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Exam for Nurses) for Registered Nurse licensure.

EVC's philosophy and beliefs about learning stress the integration/application of theory and practice, active involvement of the adult learner, and the teacher-facilitator role to promote critical thinking.

Recent Program Updates

Significant changes to EVC Nursing application periods

EVC Nursing is migrating the yearly Nursing application cycle from the usual Fall period (accepting applications October 1 st to 31 st ) to a Spring application period (accepting applications December 15 th through the end of February). This change will be fully in effect for the 2024-2025 school year. For the current 2023-2024 school year, we will have a transition period with different application timeframes for each program. Please look at the below for information on specific program application dates for each 2023-2024 school year program.

• Generic RN program For the 2023-2024 school year only, the EVC Nursing program will accept applications to the Generic RN program during an extended period from October 1 st , 2023 to December 31 st , 2023. Please note that this willnotaffect thestart datefor those applying this year. Students applying within this timeframe applying for Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 placement. Students will be notified of their admissions status as soon as possible, most likely in April of 2024. The rationale for this change in application cycles is twofold. First, it allows fall courses to be included in our multicriteria scoring. Secondly, it moves the timeline between the application period and your start date closer together. For the 2024-2025 school year, the EVC Nursing application cycle for the Generic RN program will occur in Spring only.
• Advanced Placement programs (LVN-RN Bridge, Military/Veteran, or BRN Deficient applicants): For the 2023-2024 school year only, the EVC Nursing program will accept applications for the above-listed advanced placement programs in both Fall and Spring: during the October 1 st to 31 st window and the February 1 st to 29 th window. Fall applicants will be considered for placement as early as the following Spring semester, and Spring applicants will be considered for placement for the next Fall semester. For the 2024-2025 school year and after that, the EVC Nursing application cycle for the above-listed advanced placement programs will occur in Spring only.

Important information for Nursing students taking Patho for Allied Health (NURS 119) and/or Pharmacology in Nursing (NURS 120):

• This information applies to students who are not planning to use these courses in the EVC Multi-criteria admissions process. (I.E. You are a student from an outside nursing program or are planning to apply to a non-EVC nursing program).
  
  • Enrollment in these courses requires Anatomy and/or Physiology. To clear the prerequisite of Anatomy (BIOL 071) and Physiology (BIOL 072) complete the following steps:
    
    • Email EVCNURSING@EVC.EDU indicating your interest in the above courses. Attach your unofficial transcripts showing you have completed both Anatomy & Physiology at another school.
    • The Nursing Program representatives will review and provide an exception if your courses are acceptable.
      
      • The prerequisite override will state, “Course override completed, transcripts reviewed for successful completion of Anatomy and/or Physiology courses. This override is for NURS 119 and/or NURS 120 only. The override does not constitute a course substitution and cannot be used for any other courses or programs at EVC.”

      Older Program Updates

      1. Beginning October 2018 for the Fall 2019/Spring2020 Application Cycle, a Multicriteri​a Selection process will be utilized (see Nursing Enrollment Page). ​
      2. Beginning January 1, 2017, SB466, Policy Credit for Military Education/Credit will be implemented. Policy created ​December 22, 2016.
      3. Beginning October 2014, there is no recency requirement for any of the nursing prerequisites (which include Anatomy, Microbiology, Physiology)
      4. The Board of Registered Nursing requires either a Social Security Number or Federal Tax ID Number at the point of application for the RN licensing exam (NCLEX).
      5. Effective October 2023, Test for Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) CHANGES - The EVC Nursing department will only accept TEAS version 7 scores with a passing score of 62% or higher.
      6. Do you have a Baccalaureate degree from another school in the US? SB 1393: students who have earned a Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college are only required to complete the coursework required for the registered nursing program, including prerequisites and nursing coursework. These students are not required to complete any other courses to meet graduation requirements for the associate degree. However, to apply for licensure through the CA Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), EVC nursing program graduates are required to complete 3.0 units of each of the following courses or equivalent courses: General Psychology (Psych 001), Oral (verbal) communications (COMS 010, 020, 035, 040, 045) and Societal/Cultural Pattern (ETH 010, 011, 030, 035, 040, 042, SOC 010, 011, SSCI 020, 050, ANTH 063).

      ATI TEAS

      Test for Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)

      SB 1309 allows community colleges to utilize approved diagnostic assessment tools prior to enrollment in the nursing program. EVC uses the Test for Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). For additional information on the TEAS, visit atitesting.com

      EVC requires a qualifying score of 62% on the TEAS version 7.
